Durham Reads Together. Thousands of people participated by reading the book, talking about it or meeting
the author. Foundation gifts inspired additional funding from numerous partner organizations.
Private gifts allowed staff to demonstrate the importance of and community interest in dynamic programming.
The result was increased public funding from the Board of County Commissioners.

Created “A day with Isabel Allende” events, which inspired many organizations to partner with the
Library for two programs attended by 1,300 people; and purchased additional copies of her books.
The Herald-Sun featured bilingual book reviews and printed the programs.

A film and discussion series funded by private donations, presented in partnership with National Human Genome
Research Institute; National Institutes of Health; Department of Health and Human Services * USA;
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; The Carolina Center for Genome Sciences; Duke University’s
Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy and Center for the Study of Medical Ethics and Humanities; and Durham County
Library.

The Library is relaunching Library Youth Partners, a program that prepares teens to present fun,
literature-based storytime programs for young children that also teach art, science, history and math concepts.

Participation in the Summer Reading Club grew by more than 190% between 2000 to 2007.
Private donations allow staff to secure the best authors, illustrators and performers well in advance, which allows better marketing and builds interest.
